General Questions
AncestryCodex is a self-hosted family tree management application. It allows you to build, visualize, and share your family history with full control over your data. Unlike cloud-based services, your data stays on your own server.
AncestryCodex offers both free and premium versions. The core features are available for free. Premium features like AI-powered biography generation and advanced reporting require a license. Visit our store for pricing details.
GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) is a standard file format for exchanging genealogical data between different software applications. AncestryCodex supports GEDCOM 7, the latest version of this standard.
This means you can:
- Import family trees from other genealogy software
- Export your data for use in other applications
- Share your research with family members using different software
Yes! AncestryCodex supports multiple users with different roles and permissions:
- Admin - Full access to all features and settings
- Editor - Can add and edit individuals, families, and media
- Viewer - Can view the family tree but not make changes
- Guest - Limited view access based on privacy settings
AncestryCodex stores your data in JSON files on your server. This approach offers several benefits:
- No database server required
- Easy to backup (just copy files)
- Human-readable format
- Portable and easy to migrate
Media files (photos, documents) are stored in the writable/uploads directory.
AncestryCodex is a web application that runs on a server. However, you can run it on a local server (like XAMPP or WAMP) on your own computer for offline use. Note that some features like AI biography generation require an internet connection.
There are two ways to backup your data:
- Export GEDCOM - Go to Admin Settings → GEDCOM → Export to create a GEDCOM file
- File Backup - Copy the entire
writabledirectory which contains all your data and uploads
We recommend doing both regularly to ensure your data is safe.
